Gloucester Township Police Media Release: GTPD Investigate Fatal Motor Vehicle Crash Involving a Garbage Truck

On Tuesday, September 6, 2022 at approximately 6:51 PM Gloucester Township Police were dispatched to the area of the 900 Block of Johnson Road to investigate a report of a serious motor vehicle crash with entrapment and a possible vehicle fire. Arriving officers located a 2005 Chevrolet Malibu that had struck the rear of a garbage truck causing the driver to be pinned inside of the vehicle. Firefighters from Lambs Terrace Fire Department were on location working to extricate the driver of the Malibu as they were suffering from apparent serious bodily injury. Once removed from the vehicle, members from Inspira BLS and Virtua Paramedics worked to stabilize the driver who was transported to Jefferson Washington Township with life threatening injuries.
Johnson Road was shut down for approximately 3 hours while the Gloucester Township Police Department Serious Crash Investigation Team (SCIT) conducted an initial investigation into the cause of the crash. Initial information revealed that the garbage truck was occupied by the driver while two additional employees were at the rear of the truck actively loading it with refuse. One of the employees observed the Malibu headed towards their immediate direction with no indication it was going to stop and pushed the other employee from the rear of the garbage truck moments before the Malibu collided with the rear of the truck. None of the employees working on the garbage truck were injured in the incident. It was later learned that the driver of the Malibu had succumb to his injuries and was pronounced deceased.
